Viola M. (Keller) Herbst

November 27, 1931 - February 8, 2022

Viola M. (Keller) Herbst, of East Prospect, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, 11:25 am, at Wellspan York Hospital, at the age of 90. She was the wife of the late Dean Y. Herbst who entered eternal rest on September 25, 2011. She was born in Lower Windsor Township, on the family farm, November 27, 1931, and was the daughter of the late Russell M. and Margaret P. (Miller) Keller. Viola attended the Canadochly One Room School, then went to work on the family farm along with her sister, Mary. She and Dean lived on the farm, where her first two sons, Bruce and Kenneth were born, until the passing of her father in 1958. While on the farm, she worked hard in the fields, caring for the animals, canning and many other chores. After Russell’s passing, they moved to East Prospect, where her third son Dennis was born. Her mother also moved to East Prospect and lived with them, with Viola as her caregiver. She was a life member of Canadochly Lutheran Church in Delroy where she was baptized, went through catechism, and was married to Dean on April 19, 1952. Viola was an avid card player, she continued to garden, caring for her family, and raised chickens and ducks. Dean took great care of Viola up until his passing in 2011, when she became wheelchair bound and then Bruce became her full-time caregiver. Viola leaves to cherish her memories, her two sons, Bruce D. Herbst, of East Prospect and Kenneth A. Herbst and his wife Kimberly of Wrightsville. She was the loving grandmother to Jonathan D Herbst (Ellen) and Matthew G. Herbst (Brianna) both of York, great grandmother to Bennett and Finnley, and the sister of Mary E. Shoff of Dallastown. Viola also leaves numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Dennis on December 8, 2013. Family and friends are invited to share memories during the viewing on Monday, February 14, 2022, from 10-11 am at Canadochly Lutheran Church, 4921 East Prospect Road, York. The Service of Honor Praise for Viola will begin at 11 am at the church, with her pastor, Rev. Allen M. Schwarz officiating. Burial will follow the service at Canadochly Cemetery. Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion is assisting the family with the arrangements. Viola was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a very hard worker and lived her life following her Lord and Savior. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. A special thank you is given to Elly Fillmore for her assistance to Bruce in caring for Viola over the past six years. Having been the grandmother and great grandmother to all boys, Viola always loved when Elly brought her four-month-old daughter, Ada Mae (which is Viola’s middle name), to visit, she was a ray of sunshine for Viola. The family would also like to thank all the caregivers over the years who have helped in any way, big or small, and to the nurses and staff of Wellspan York Hospital for the wonderful care they provided during her stay with them.
